Pectolite- An acid silicate hydrate of calcium and Sodium, Pectolite is the product of Cobalt substitution for Calcium. Mined mainly in Caribbean Dominican Republic, Pectolite is actually a cavity filler of Miocene Volcanic rocks, Andesites and Basalts. With the erosion of these rocks, pectolite fillings are carried down slope to Alluvium and the beach gravel. Sediments reaching sea-bed get a natural colour polishing due to tumble effect in comparison to dark gravels of stream bed. This forms into gemstone known as Larimar. Larimar originates its name from a combination of discoverer’s daughter name ‘Larissa’ and Spanish name for sea ‘Mar’. This stone is graded on the basis of colouration.
